About and methodology
New Business Lists turns three states' public business-filing records into weekly county lists, with the addresses that do not reach owners flagged.
Sources
- Florida: Florida Department of State, Division of Corporations: daily corporate data files
- New York: New York Department of State: Daily Corporation and Other Entity Filing Data (data.ny.gov)
- Colorado: Colorado Secretary of State: Business Entities in Colorado (data.colorado.gov)
- New York history before the rolling 30-day window: the Department of State's active corporations dataset. Companies formed and dissolved within the same year are missing from it, so New York's older weeks slightly undercount.
How we count
A new business is a formation or registration filing: a new LLC, corporation, nonprofit, limited partnership or LLP, including out-of-state companies registering to do business in the state. Amendments, annual reports and name changes are excluded, and so are Florida records whose filing date is more than 90 days before they were published (conversions and reinstatements of older companies).
Weeks run Monday to Sunday and count filings by the date the state published them, not the filing date, because Florida publishes about a week after filing and a count by filing date is always short for recent weeks.
County: New York reports the county of principal office. For Florida and Colorado we map the principal address ZIP code to the county holding most of its land area (Census 2020 ZCTA-to-county relationship file), using the mailing address when the principal office is out of state, and the city only when there is no usable ZIP. A company with no in-state address has no county. Florida leaves the state blank on most addresses, so we read it from the ZIP.
Shared address: an address (street and city, suite numbers ignored) that appears on 10 or more new filings in the same state within 30 days. Individual agent (the self_filed column): the registered agent is one of the company's officers (Florida), the company itself or a person (New York), or a person (Colorado). Agent service: a registered agent that is a company named on 20 or more filings in 30 days, or one of the national services we list by name.
Freshness

The site and the counts rebuild every morning; lists go out at 8:45 a.m. Eastern.
What we do not do
We do not append phone numbers or emails, buy data, or guess at industries. We do not publish officers' names or street addresses on this website; they go only to subscribers, as the states publish them.
